Advocat (AVCA)
Advocat, Inc. provides a range of
nursing, social and other long-term care services to the elderly including
skilled nursing, ancillary health care services and assisted living. To
distinguish itself in the industry, Advocat also offers a variety of
rehabilitative, nutritional, respiratory and other specialized ancillary
services. Advocat’s objective is to become the provider of choice of
health care and related services to the elderly in the communities where
it operates. The company’s operating strategy is based upon providing a
broad range of cost-effective elder care services, increasing occupancy in
its nursing centers through physical plant improvements and an increased
emphasis on marketing efforts, improving the quality of its payor mix and
clustering its operations on a regional basis.
As of December 31, 2005, Advocat’s continuing operations included 43
nursing centers containing 4,505 licensed nursing beds and 78 assisted
living units. In its 2005 annual report, Advocat announced plans to
specialize in the skilled nursing aspect of long-term care and divest its
assisted living facilities. At that time Advocat was operating skilled
nursing centers that it owned or was leasing, ranging in size from 48 to
180 licensed nursing beds and located in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.
In a transaction that closed May 16, 2006, Advocat sold 11 assisted living
facilities (ALFs) that were part of a portfolio of 15 owned and 14 leased
ALFs that previous management had acquired in 1997 from Pierce Management
Group for $34.1 million. The transaction allowed Advocat to rid itself of
most of its assisted living component to concentrate on its skilled
nursing business.
