Decade in Review: Medical Device M&A Activity Increasing

NORWALK, CT – February 14, 2011 – The medical device sector posted a total of 171 deals in 2010, according to Deal Search Online, the Irving Levin Associates M&A database. This total ranks fifth over the last decade. Based on revealed prices, a grand total of $41,657,590,000 was spent on medical device merger and acquisition transactions in 2010. This number represents a 201% increase from the prior year’s total.
The number of medical device M&A deals in 2010 was almost evenly spread across all four quarters: 41 deals in the first quarter, 44 deals in the second, 45 deals in the third and 41 deals in the fourth, according to Deal Search Online. The table below shows the five largest medical device M&A deals of 2010. Three of the top five medical device transactions occurred in the 4th quarter signaling that capital and confidence are returning to the market.
