VCs Investing At A Vigorous Pace - Health Care Companies Raise More Dollars, Announce More Deals In Q3:06

Email Editor

For the second year in a row, the total amount of venture capital funding raised by health care companies during third quarter has increased by close to 30%, compared with the previous year. However, dollar volume increased only slightly in the third quarter, compared with the second quarter 2006. For the three months ended September 30, 2006, a total of 109 health care venture capital investments with disclosed values were confirmed, amounting to nearly $2.2 billion in funding. Both the previous and year-ago quarters had 97 deals.

Medical device companies accounted for the most deals, with 31% of the total number, but pharmaceutical companies garnered the greatest dollar amount of funding in one sector, with 31% of that total. About two-thirds of the medical device deals announced were rounds that closed for less than $20 million apiece. The largest deal in the sector was a $45.2 million Series C announced by EnteroMedics, a company developing an electrostimulation device for the potential treatment of obesity.

In the pharmaceutical sector, about half the deals were Series A financings, with some that were announced concurrently with other agreements, including Artisan Pharma, which was established as part of a licensing deal with Japan-based Asahi Kasei Pharma and raised $39 million. MerLion Pharmaceuticals closed a $30 million first round simultaneously with its merger with two other companies, and Zogenix raised an initial round of $60 million to fund the acquisition of certain assets from Aradigm. Cabrellis Pharmaceuticals, which secured $27.5 million in Series A financing, is a spin-out of Conforma Therapeutics. As featured in our last issue, Intranasal Therapeutics, Inc. raised $39.1 million in its first round to support product launch efforts.

Corporations or corporate venture capital affiliates that contributed to pharmaceutical venture financings during the third quarter include Roche Venture Fund, Teva Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: TEVA), Mitsubishi International Corporation, Lilly Ventures and Novartis Bioventures. In Medical Devices, corporate backing came from Safeguard Scientific, Advanced Medical Optics, Electro Scientific Industries, Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), Elron Electronic Industries, Elbit Medical Imaging and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation.

Biopharmaceutical venture capital deals accounted for 26% of total dollars invested during the third quarter ended September 30, 2006, and 20% of the total number of deals announced. Many companies in this sector are developing protein-based therapeutics to address major unmet medical needs, including cancer, inflammation and metabolic and autoimmune disorders, but a few are targeting specialized indications such as celiac sprue. Teva and Roche appeared as corporate investors again in biopharmaceuticals, along with Kos Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: KOSP) and MedImmune (NASDAQ: MEDI).

Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals were each responsible for 17% of the number deals announced, but the biotechnology deals only account for 13% of the total funding for the quarter. Novo Nordisk, Maxygen and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation were among the corporate investors that funded biotechs during the third quarter ended September 30, 2006. Other investors of interest, In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture arm, and also Vanderbilt University contributed to the venture capital raised in Biotechnology during the third quarter. Lilly Ventures, as well as Novartis and Teva participated in venture capital rounds announced in Pharmaceuticals.

New Enterprise Associates led two of the five largest rounds announced during the quarter, the $91 million Series B raised by Esprit Pharmaceuticals, and the $60 million Series B secured by Amicus Therapeutics. BA Venture Partners and Domain Associates also participated in two of the top five deals. Domain contributed to the financing of Esprit, as well as a $60 million Series C announced by Prestwick Pharmaceuticals that included BA Venture Partners, which also invested in the $60 million Series A announced by Zogenix.
