As stability begins to return to the health care market, equity offerings may increase Although the equity financing market remains tepid, at best, there are signs that improvement may be coming in the near future, especially for health care services. In fact, one banker from a major Wall Street firm told this publication that he believes health care services companies will perform in this decade much like the biotechnology stocks did in the 1990s. That is about the most bullish statement we have heard in more than two years. But this should not be that surprising, given the depth from which many of the health care sectors have risen from and the relatively positive news from fourth quarter earnings announcements. Hospital companies and managed care organizations are showing good earnings growth with improved prospects for 2001, while the home health care industry appears to be returning to profitability. Even long-term care is showing some signs of life, despite the fact that there are several quarters to go before normality returns, especially for the assisted living companies. |
