Seniors Housing Weekly Update -- A Rating for Seniors Housing Communities

A Rating for Seniors Housing Communities
What’s in a rating? For the U.S. government, it means everything. And for Standard & Poor’s, the only rating agency to downgrade the federal debt in the summer of 2011, it has meant headaches and now, major litigation from the feds. In seniors housing, where, believe it or not, many people still don’t know the difference between assisted living, a CCRC and sometimes even skilled nursing, a rating of a community, together with reviews, can be a first step when looking around for a new home for mom. I am talking about Caring.com, and its five star ratings of assisted living and memory care communities, which is not to be confused with CMS’s five star rating system for skilled nursing. Based on consumer ratings and reviews, only 383 communities were listed as “Caring Star Communities.” And if you don’t think the big boys believe this to be important, Brookdale Senior Living had 53 of these top-rated communities, and Emeritus had 48. When occupancy and your financial health are key, having a top rating can be very important. Just ask the U.S. Treasury Department.
