LeadingAge—formerly known as The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA)—is comprised of nonprofit, mission-based organizations that provide care and services to senior citizens in the United States. LeadingAge is committed to the advancement of six consumer-centered ideals about aging services: dignity of all persons at every stage of life; services people need, when they need them, in the place they call home; quality that people can trust; mission-driven, not-for-profit values; advocacy for the right public policy for the right reasons; and leadership through shared learning.
In 2008, the group decided that the association’s name did not do justice to the leadership and quality members provided. They called for a study to find AAHSA not just a new name, but a redefined identity that reflected the association’s aspirations for the 21st century and beyond.
The result of that mandate is the association’s name: Leading Age. This name resulted from a comprehensive research process that included interviews with members about not only what they wanted their association to be called, but what it’s ethos – its DNA- should be. Members overwhelmingly approved the name during a vote in July 2010.
At last count, LeadingAge had more than 5,400 members at three levels, including provider, business and associate memberships, and 39 state association affiliates representing 43 states. Leading Age (AAHSA) promotes publications that are aligned with the interest of its members, maintains a directory of product and service providers, and also holds annual conferences and networking events for its members.
