LifePoint Hospitals, a spin-off of hospital giant HCA, operates some 50 hospitals (with about 6,000 total beds) that are located in non-urban areas where they are, in most cases, the only available acute care facilities. LifePoint’s hospitals are located in 17 states, with the heaviest concentrations in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Virginia. LifePoint participates in the HealthTrust Purchasing Group, a group purchasing organization that negotiates competitive contracts on medical supplies and equipment.
Unlike major urban medical centers, the hospitals that LifePoint operates don’t usually engage in extensive medical research, train legions of new doctors, or perform organ transplants. LifePoint’s facilities do provide basic medical and surgical care, as well as specialty care in a number of areas, including oncology and psychiatric services. Some of its hospitals have skilled nursing units and offer neurosurgery, open heart surgery, and outpatient services.
