Senior Housing Properties Trust is a real estate investment trust (REIT) which owns independent living and assisted living communities, continuing care retirement communities, nursing homes and wellness centers located throughout the United States. All of Senior Housing Properties Trust’s properties are triple-net leased, meaning that each tenant pays them rent and is also responsible to pay all operating costs, taxes, insurance and maintenance costs that arise from the ownership and use of the property. Senior Housing Properties Trust was created by HRPT Properties Trust in 1998 and spun out to HRPT’s shareholders in 1999 as a seperate publicly traded REIT on the New York Stock Exchange.
