Timothy Smick

President, Harbor Retirement Associates

Mr. Smick is entering his 41th year in the senior care business and the servant-leader mission that originally inspired him to pursue a vocation in senior living is as strong today as it was in the beginning. Mr. Smick focused on a vocation in senior care when he was blessed with some great counsel while still a junior college student. He astutely recognized a long-term care industry in its embryonic stage. He saw an industry about to undergo a rapid demographic growth that would likely provide tremendous future leadership opportunities. With a compelling desire to make a difference in the lives of seniors and how they aged, Mr. Smick’s career did indeed grow as predicted as the senior care industry rapidly expanded. In the past, he has served as the:

  • Chief Executive Officer of PersonaCare, Inc., a Baltimore-based skilled nursing facility operator;
  • Chief Operating Officer of Sunrise Senior Living (one of the nation’s leading assisted living providers);
  • Regional Director of Operations of Manor Healthcare (a leading skilled nursing facility operator);
  • Operations Director for Allied Health & Management (a skilled nursing provider).

Mr. Smick founded Harbor Retirement Associates (HRA) in 2002 and serves as its President and CEO. HRA develops and operates Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care communities throughout the eastern half of the United States. The company is currently operating and developing in 11 states (FL, AL SC, MI, IL, WI, PA, DE, VA, TX, and NJ). The company now operates 22 communities and has 15 additional communities either under construction or in development. Having a vocation centered on a strong sense of mission continues to motivate Mr. Smick’s dedication to serving seniors. He works hard at intentionally shaping HRA’s culture around shared core values that, once inculcated, can play a potent role in the company’s ability to attract great leaders also dedicated to the mission of serving seniors. Mr. Smick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.
