Technology Deal of the Week
The largest deal of the week was Fluidigm Corporation’s (NASDAQ: FLDM) announced acquisition of DVS Sciences, Inc., for $207.5 million. DVS Sciences produces systems to conduct multi-parameter single-cell protein analysis, while Fluidigm specializes in disruptive single-cell analysis capabilities to life science researchers around the world. Technology-side deals accounted for nine of the top 10 deals in January, with targets in the Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Medical Device sectors. The lone Services-side deal was Quest Diagnostics’ (NYSE: DGX) acquisition of Solstas Lab Partners Group from private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe. The preliminary total for the month’s deals stands at $10.5 billion, with the top 10 accounting for 95% of all deals that came with prices. Services Deal of the Week
Atlantic Health System, one of the largest non-profit systems in New Jersey, agreed to acquire Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, a 111-bed acute-care general hospital, from Adventist HealthCare. The reasons given were purely geographical, as Adventist is based on Montgomery County, Maryland and Hackettstown Regional was its only facility in New Jersey. The transaction, which is subject to all the usual state regulatory reviews, comes hard on the heels of the January 1 merger between Atlantic Health System and Chilton Hospital, which was announced way back in October 2012. ……..Want to read more news? With the Super Bowl still hot news, we have to mention the recent awards given to five startups by General Electric (NYSE: GE), the National Football League and Under Armour for their work toward developing a better test for concussion. The first round of the Head Health Challenge resulted in $300,000 awards to Banyan Biomarkers, BrainScope Company, Cortical Metrics, ImmunArray Inc. and Quatnerix.
