Skilled Healthcare Group (formerly SHG Holding Solutions) doesn’t give its elderly clients the fountain of youth, but the nursing home operator does help them live their lives more comfortably. Through its nursing homes, Skilled Healthcare specializes in providing intensive medical care for sicker elderly patients, such as those recovering from stroke or hip replacement surgery. Skilled Healthcare also provides rehabilitation services and hospice care through other divisions. The company is majority owned by investment firm Onex.
Skilled Healthcare depends on referrals of such patients from hospitals and doctors, and it has initiated alliances with major medical centers (including Baylor Health Care System in Dallas) to increase desirable referrals. An increasing number of its nursing homes feature Express Recovery units, which are separate rehabilitation wings that provide comprehensive rehab programs for some patients recovering from disease or surgery.
While focused on its long-term care facilities, Skilled Healthcare has also been growing its ancillary health care services segment, which includes the operations of rehab therapy provider Hallmark Rehabilitation and hospice services unit Hospice Care of the West. Hallmark serves the company’s own nursing homes, as well as more than 20 non-affiliated facilities.
